HMO Customer Racing races into 2022 TCR Australia Championship with three-pronged attack

HMO Customer Racing is aiming to regain the TCR Australia title with a three-pronged attack, beginning at this weekend’s opening round of the 2022 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Championship at Symmons Plains near Launceston.

The Sydney-based team heads to the tight and technical 2.41km Tasmanian circuit full of confidence after a productive off-season in which its fleet of Hyundai i30 N TCR racers were fully refreshed, now featuring a striking new-look livery, and a positive pre-season shakedown test at Wakefield Park recently.

Nathan Morcom leads the team for a third consecutive season and hopes to be a consistent front runner in his bid for the title while Josh Buchan is looking to build on the race-winning performances during his breakthrough rookie season last year to mount a forceful championship challenge from the outset.

HMO Customer Racing will expand to a three-car team for the entire 2022 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia championship with 18-year-old rising star, Bailey Sweeny, who is a member of the Erebus Racing Academy, joining the outfit to give it a formidable blend of youth and experience.

Nathan Morcom

“I’m really excited to get racing again and I’m confident that I, and the team, have never been better prepared for the start of a season. The cars look fast in their new livery, and we’re starting bigger and better than ever with three fully-refreshed Hyundai i30 N TCRs.”

“We had our ups and down last year, and we’ve taken what we learnt from the positive results and look to put those lessons into practice this season with consistent podium results to keep us in the hunt for the championship throughout the entire year and get these cars back to where they deserve – up the front.”

Josh Buchan

“The goals for 2022 are pretty simple; get out there and if anyone is in front of me then pass them. And hopefully that will be good enough to claim the series, or at least a couple of race wins along the way.”

“The value of scoring points is very, very obvious; going into the last round of the 2021 series we had a mathematical chance of taking the title but it fell apart. My aim is to be consistently up at the pointy end of the grid and take some gold.”

Bailey Sweeny

“This is undoubtedly the biggest weekend of my racing career so far; a new car, new competitors and a new track that I’ve never physically raced on before. But I’m really excited for the challenge and have been watching plenty of on-board videos and using my simulator to familiarise myself as much as possible.”

“The test day at Wakefield Park was really positive and I managed to get a lot of laps in. The Hyundai i30 N TCR is nothing like what I’ve driven in the past but it feels like a fantastic race car. I’ve got a steep learning curve ahead of me and I know that I’ve got a great team, and team mates alongside, to help me climb it.”

Padayachee excited for TCR Australia debut in Hyundai

Words by TCR Australia – 25th March 2021

Duvashen Padayachee is looking forward to his maiden event for HMO Customer Racing at Mount Panorama for Round 3 of the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series.

Padayachee, 30, will drive the Hyundai i30 N TCR that Nathan Morcom raced in 2019 – the first time that car has raced since Morcom won the final race of thee 2019 season at The Bend Motorsport Park.

His debut TCR race will be run under the #130, alongside the team’s other two cars for Morcom (#11) and Josh Buchan (#30).

The TCR round will be the debut for the turbo-charged touring cars at Mount Panorama, supporting the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.

The race is a one-off for Padayachee at the moment, but after enjoying a recent test day at Wakefield Park, he says that he is looking forward to his touring car debut.

“I had an evaluation day at Wakefield Park which was quite nice. I really enjoyed the car,” he said.

“It’s a proper race car, and that enticed me to do the first round. It’s just a one-off at the moment, but I’ll see how it all plays out.

“Bathurst is awesome. I love the track, It’s the best track here in Australia. These cars will suit the track, the racing will be really good as well.”

Padayachee has spent the past few seasons competing in Porsche Carrera Cup competition, but ever keen for a new challenge, he selected TCR as his next step because of its diverse, competitive nature.

“I have never looked at Supercars or Super2 as a category that I can compete in due to work commitments, so the reason why I wanted to do TCR is that it’s one of the most competitive and professional class that Australia has outside of Supercars/Super2,” he said.

“You always want to race against the best. There’s current Supercars drivers in there, Supercars co-drivers and young up-and-comers. It’s got a great mix of driving talent and professional teams, so that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to be involved.

“You can go door-to-door, overtaking is easier than other classes, and the BOP (balance of performance) ensures that it is close between the brands. I think that will make the racing even better, particularly at a circuit like Bathurst.”

The look of Padayachee’s car will be revealed shortly, and is set to match the of HMO Customer Racing’s increasing stable of cars.

And thanks to the family’s connections to Hyundai, the choice of car and team made sense.

“Our family business is the largest Hyundai forklift dealer in Australia, so we work with Hyundai and Hyundai Material Handling a lot,” he said.

“Having a Hyundai TCR car, with a great organisation like HMO, means that everything is aligned and makes sense.

“Nathan and the HMO team do an awesome job. The cars are presented well, and being the champion team from 2019 with Will (Brown), you know that their cars are going to be capable of running at the front end. For me, there’s no better team to align with at the first round and hopefully a few more.”

Team manager Scott Fulcher says that he has been impressed with Padayachee’s initial introduction into the team and feels that he will be competitive from the outset.

“He did very well in testing. At Wakefield Park, Nathan set him a base line time, and they were very close in times through the day,” said Fulcher.

“He has experience in other categories and is certainly no slouch. He should certainly do well, despite his lack of front wheel drive miles.”

HMO Customer Racing Secures Josh Buchan for 2021 Season

HMO Customer Racing secures Josh Buchan for 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR

TCR Australia Series champions secure second driver for 2021

  • Words by TCR Australia – 18/01/2021

Young gun Josh Buchan has secured the plum seat at HMO Customer Racing for the 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series this year.

Buchan replaces inaugural series champion Will Brown in the #30 i30 N, with Brown taking on a full-time drive for Erebus Motorsport in the Supercars Championship.

Buchan, 24, is a former New South Wales Formula Ford state champion, and won the 2019 Bathurst 12 Hour Formula Ford Festival and finished runner-up in the 2019 Australian Formula 3 Championship.

Prior to his signing late last year, the young New South Welshman sampled the i30 N at Wakefield Park, and according to the team, showed strong pace in his maiden drive.

Buchan will join team regular Nathan Morcom, who will drive the #11 Hyundai i30 N and will look to improve on his fifth place finish in 2019. Morcom won the final race win for the year at The Bend.

The #30 Buchan entry will feature different backing to Morcom’s car, with Powercrank Batteries adorning the side of the car.

The 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series kicks off at Symmons Plains this Sunday, January 24, with two practice sessions followed by qualifying and Race 1 on Monday and Races 2 and 3 on Tuesday (Australia Day).

“I still can’t believe it. I found out not too long ago and it still doesn’t feel real,” said Buchan.

“This morning, once it was Facebook official, I was getting a lot of messages and calls, so I’m really excited.

“The Hyundai TCR car is totally its own beast. I was fortunate that I have been able to secure a drive in the Hyundai because out of all of the brands in TCR, it’s one of the strongest. The test at Wakefield Park was great – totally different to anything I’ve driven previously, but I felt that I adapted to it quickly.

“I haven’t raced at Symmons Plains before. I’ve driven past it, so that’s as close as I’ve been. I’m pretty confident that within the first session, I should be able to get my head around things and have a good weekend.

“It’s not daunting replacing Will (Brown). The car and the team have proven themselves. HMO is the outfit that everyone wants to be with so I consider myself fortunate that they’ve signed me up. I’m not taking too much pressure into it, and I feel that if we all do our job, then we’ll be competitive.

“Barry Morcom is a champion of motor racing. He is the guy you want to drive for, so I can’t thank him enough for the chance. And to have a guy like Rob Benson in the squad, he has been pivotal getting me into the car. I can’t wait for the season to start.”

HMO Customer Racing Continues Search For 2020 Drivers

HMO Customer Racing Continues The Search For 2020 Drivers

TCR Australia Series champions yet to sign driver for potential 3rd car

Words by TCR Australia – 15/01/2020

Champion TCR Australia Series team HMO Customer Racing is continuing its drive to secure at least one more driver for its 2020 campaign.

The Sydney-based Hyundai team is in a position to run three, or as many as four i30 Ns this season, and is keen to expand after the initial success it enjoyed last year.

HMO was chasing the services of a high-profile driver, however, other racing opportunities have thrown cold water on their abilities to secure his signature.

The team is not deterred, though, and is aiming to lock away its line-up soon to be best prepared for the new season.

Team owner Barry Morcom is disappointed that his ‘Plan A’ has fallen short, but is keen to explore all other options.

“We have been working quite hard on one particular driver, but unfortunately, he is no longer an option for us,” said Morcom.

“We’ve been talking with multiple people for the third or fourth car in our stable, but are yet to put pen to paper. Enquiries from drivers are most definitely still welcome as we are geared up and ready to go.

“Our team has proven how strong the Hyundai i30 Ns are, but we know the competition will be gunning for us this year. We can’t wait to get into it.”

While not confirmed, it is expected that inaugural series champion Will Brown and race winner Nathan Morcom will continue to drive for the team.

The team is expected to make a formal announcement on its driver line-ups and sponsorships prior to the season-opening test at Winton Motor Raceway on February 26. The free-to-the-public test will see all TCR Australia entries lay down laps around the rural Victorian circuit, and fans will be given the opportunity to win hot laps. More details on the test will be confirmed in due course.

HMO Customer Racing Aims to Expand Entries in 2020

HMO CUSTOMER RACING AIMS TO EXPAND ENTRIES IN 2020

Inaugural TCR Australia Series champions HMO Customer Racing could run as many as four cars in the 2020 TCR Australia Series.

Words by TCR Australia

HMO Customer Racing, Hyundai Motorsport’s official Australian importer of its successful TCR machinery, is making plans to grow from two cars to three, or possibly four, after its success in the inaugural season that saw Will Brown claim the title honours.

While the makeup of the driver line-up is not officially locked away, team owner Barry Morcom has his sights set on entering more cars if the right deals could be put together.

“The sixth car has been ordered and is going to come into Australia around February next year,” said Morcom.

“The idea is that we will use this as a spare car, just in case one car gets damaged and can’t be turned around in time for the next event.

“We are geared up to run three cars. At a pinch we could do four, but we are comfortably ready to run three, and that is the intention for next year. If we can get a couple of deals across the line, we will have three cars at a minimum on the grid.”

The HMO Customer Racing team was the dominant force in this year’s TCR Australia Series, with Brown claiming seven race wins, fifteen podiums and nine fastest race laps.

Nathan Morcom added to the team’s success with victory in the last race of the year, finishing fourth in the points standings and helping the Sydney-based squad win the team’s title.

HMO Customer Racing will hold a ride day for fans and followers of the team on Tuesday 17 December, with demand for places on the day so strong that the team has been forced to add a second car to the day.

Already close to 50 guests will get the chance to sample a ride from the passenger seat of the team’s Hyundai i30 N TCR car, driven by Brown and Morcom.

The last spots are being filled now, and you can lock in your spot by visiting this page.

HMO Customer Racing Dominate Season Finale

HMO CUSTOMER RACING DOMINATE SEASON FINALE

HMO Customer Racing has wrapped up the final round of the TCR Australia Series in style by winning two out of three races offered at The Bend Motorsport Park.

Will Brown stood on the podium after every race while Nathan Morcom claimed his maiden win in the final race of the series.

Qualifying – Will Brown P2, Nathan Morcom P5

Brown was proven as the man to beat after sitting at the top of timesheet for the majority of the session.

A second pole position for series looked likely before Dylan O’Keeffe went to P1 with five minutes left, with Brown unable to provide the answer to finish in P2.

On the other side of the garage, Morcom had his best qualifying position of the year, finishing the session in P5.

Race 1 – Will Brown P1, Nathan Morcom DNF

Brown was left alone on the front row of the grid after the pole-sitter failed to make it onto the track.

Despite the advantage, Brown would be beaten into the first turn by D’Alberto but the exchange for the lead would prove temporary as the series champion would regain the lead shortly after.

Morcom made a fast start off the third row and went through the opening turn in P4.

Later in the lap, Morcom attempted to move past Cameron in P3, but the attempt proved costly as the #11 car was strung wide at Turn 6, consequently dropping down the order as cars moved up the inside.

An incident involving Heimgartner, McAdam, and Angelo on lap 2 called the safety car onto the track after two cars were caught in the sand trap.

Racing resumed on lap 5 where Brown darted off the re-start, as he started to build his margin on P2.

On lap 6, Morcom’s race came to a dramatic end when his front right hub broke, forcing the car to retire.

Brown would receive little competition for the rest of the race as he went on to claim his seventh victory of the season.

Race 2 –  Will Brown P2, Nathan Morcom P6

Moving into Race 2, Brown and Morcom would start at different ends of the grid.

Brown filed into Turn 1 with the lead in hand, as Morcom moved up three spots on the opening lap.

Brown became instantly under pressure from the start, as Cameron moved onto the tail of the #30 car in the challenge for the lead.

The battle continued to rage before Brown left a gap open after a massive slide and moved back to P2.

Morcom looked like a man on a mission as he powered through the field in the opening half of the race.

He reached P6 by the end of lap 9 and looked destined to do further passing as the race went on.

As the later laps turned over, Morcom turned his attention to D’Alberto one spot ahead but was unable to make the move before the end of the race, finishing in P6.

Meanwhile, Brown enjoyed another impressive drive to cross the line in P2.

Race 3 – Nathan Morcom P1, Will Brown P3

Morcom made the early dash down the main straight on the opening lap, where he climbed into P4 while Brown dropped back to P3.

The pace inside the #11 car was too good as Morcom passed his team-mate at the Hairpin on lap 3.

Brown continued to struggle with his car, as Pither slipped past him on lap 4.

One lap later Moffat would become another victim of Morcom, as he continued to charge up the field. Moffat would later retire enabling Brown to move up another position into P4.

As the race progressed, Morcom would find himself in striking distance of the lead and would be gifted the top spot after Cox took an unexpected trip off track. The result of the incident would see Brown jump into the top three.

Pither in P2 would apply pressure to the #11 car in the latter stages but it wasn’t enough as Morcom stormed home to claim his maiden TCR Australia win.

Brown would go on to finish P3 and be officially crowned the TCR Australia Champion for 2019 at race end.

The results posted over the weekend would award HMO Customer Racing with the ‘Winning Team Award’ for the third time this year.

"It has been a fanatic weekend once again. To grab a race win and climb the podium a further two times after that was unbelievable for the team. It was great for Nath to grab his first win for the series, he puts in a lot of time away from the track on the cars so I’m happy he got his moment in Race 3."
WILL BROWN
HMO CUSTOMER RACING DRIVER
"I’m so stoked to break through for my maiden TCR Australia win. A big thanks to the team for giving me the car to do so, I’ll remember this moment for a very long time. After an unfortunate DNF at the start of the weekend, it felt good to fight back through the field and reach the top step for the first time in the series."
NATHAN MORCOM

"It was a great result for the team, first and third in the final race of the series shows how strong the Hyundai i30 N Cars really are. After seven rounds of racing, their still up the front performing at their best. We’ll look forward to celebrating the year and preparing for another big series in 2020."

HMO Customer Racing Cars For Sale

HMO CUSTOMER RACING CARS FOR SALE

HMO Customer Racing has put its two current Hyundai i30 N TCR cars on the market.

The Sydney-based team is aiming to sell the two current cars of Will Brown and Nathan Morcom, with a view of buying two more cars for the 2020 season.

The Hyundai i30 N TCR cars have proved to be the most competitive in the field, with Brown already securing the inaugural TCR Australia Series with one round in hand.

Morcom has also enjoyed a competitive season. The Sydney driver currently sits in fifth place and is involved in a tight four-way scrap for second place that will be resolved in the final round at The Bend next month.

The team currently has two other Hyundai Motorsport cars in its fleet, and is fielding interest about expanding its racing interests next year.

TCR Australia rules prohibit any make from having more than five of the same cars on the grid, and team manager Scott Fulcher says that with the increased interest in TCR and the all-conquering Hyundai, he is confident that the cars will move to new homes.

“We’ll buy two new cars, but only if we sell our two current cars,” said Fulcher.

“All around the world, the cars have proven to be one of the most competitive TCR cars, no matter what championship they compete in.

“We feel its the car to have. It just won the European championship, and they are such a refined, well-built race car.

“HMO Customer Racing has the ability to enter more cars. Our plan is to try and enter more cars, or at least have more Hyundais racing here in Australia. And there has been some strong interest in that happening.”

Will Brown Claims the Inaugural TCR Australia Title

WILL BROWN CLAIMS THE INAUGURAL TCR AUSTRALIA TITLE

Will Brown has been crowned champion of the inaugural TCR Australia Series at Sandown International Motor Raceway after extending his championship points lead to an unbeatable position with one round remaining.

HMO Customer Racing teammate Nathan Morcom battled through a tough weekend on track after a difficult qualifying session and an incident riddled Race 2.

Qualifying – Will Brown P4, Nathan Morcom P15

It was a slow start for both cars in the 20-minute session with Brown sitting in P8 and Morcom in P15 before the halfway mark.

Brown would soon find the spark as he climbed into P2 but would later drop to P4 in the dying minutes.

Morcom struggled with brake issues in the #11 car, a fault that left him near the rear of the field by the end of the session.

Race 1 – Will Brown P2, Nathan Morcom P10

Rain fell upon the track two hours before Race 1 was bound to get underway, but a late sunshine bloom prior to the start provided a sticky surface for the teams to decide what tyres they ran with for the 20 lap outing.

Brown enjoyed a strong getaway making his way to P2 instantly from the second row of the grid, while Morcom moved up one place into the opening turn.

Brown’s momentum was brief as Martin moved past him on lap 2, leaving a challenge for the series leader to stay in touch with the front-runners.

Morcom would jump into P13 after Heimgartner retired from the race on lap 5 as he continued to recover from a poor qualifying session.

Brown would load the pressure back onto Martin by lap 7 where he caught onto the tail of the Honda driver, with Cox trailing closely in P4.

Cox would make the move first and get past Brown, but the #30 car stayed in control and would climb back into P3 and eventually pick off Martin on lap 12.

As the race progressed, Morcom continued to slowly hover his way through the field to finish the #11 car inside the top ten.

Brown would close the gap on the leader towards the later stages of the race but ultimately it wasn’t enough as he crossed the line for a podium finish.

Brown would close the gap on the leader towards the later stages of the race but ultimately it was not enough as he crossed the line for a podium finish.

Race 2 –  Will Brown P7, Nathan Morcom P14

Off the line, Brown would produce one of his worst starts of the year, dropping four places into the opening turn.

Morcom, on the other hand, had a clean start but would become undone on lap 2 when Fullwood tailed the #11 car at Turn 9.

The contact left Morcom stranded in the gravel trap outside the turn as the safety car deployed shortly after when Ingall went off at Turn 1 on lap 3.

Morcom returned to the track in P16 but went a lap down after a lengthy stint in the gravel. He would climb two spots after Martin and Whitley would drop out of the race to finish in P14.

Brown put himself in the mix again moving up to as high as P4 but would fall away to P11 throughout the race.

However, the series leader found a way to get back to pass four cars at the death to clinch a P7 finish.

Race 3 – Will Brown P7, Nathan Morcom P10

Moving into the last race of the weekend, Brown needed to maintain an overall lead of 133 points or more to claim the series title.

It was a frantic start to Race 3, with Brown making his way into P5 by the end of opening turn before becoming unstuck on the entry of Turn 3 and spinning the #30 car.

The rear of the car met the tyre wall as a result but Brown managed to fish the car out and move back onto the track in P14.

Morcom stayed clear of the trouble this time around, moving into P12 by the end of the opening lap.

With the chance of securing the championship before reaching the next round, Brown was handed a stroke of luck when title contender O’Keeffe dropped through the field after making a crucial error on lap 4, moving behind both HMO Customer Racing cars.

Morcom managed to move up into P10 in the early stages of the race but was eventually mowed down by Brown as the series leader found his way past on lap 8.

Morcom would only progress one more place up the field to finish inside the top ten again as Brown crossed the line in P8, but would later move into P7 after Heimgartner was penalised post-race for an incident.

Ultimately the points gap to P2 in the overall standings would prove more than enough to crown Brown the inaugural TCR Australia Series champion.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to be the first TCR Australia Series champion. It was nice to wrap up the series this round before heading back to The Bend in a few months time. It wasn't our best weekend on track but we did what we had to do to claim the title. I can't thank the HMO Customer Racing Team enough for all their efforts throughout the year and especially Barry Morcom for putting this program together."
WILL BROWN
HMO CUSTOMER RACING DRIVER
"A pretty tough weekend in the end which started after a difficult qualifying session. Once you're at the rear of the field, it's extremely hard to fight for positions up the front for the rest of the weekend so it was disappointing not to get a solid result for any of the races. I'm still in the top 5 for the overall points so hopefully a big weekend at Tailem Bend can put myself back in the mix and into a fighting position for P3 in the standings."
NATHAN MORCOM
HMO CUSTOMER RACING DRIVER
"It was such a thrill after all the hard work that's gone into this team for Will to win the series title. As a customer racing team, we're really proud of the representing Hyundai Motorsport Official here in Australia and we look forward to continuing this relationship well into the future. We've still got a job to do at Tailem Bend in November for Nath to push further up the standings and to achieve the overall team constructors championship."
