Josh Buchan your 2023 TCR Australia Champion

Even though he was a relative late starter to motorsport – taking-up go-kart racing when he was 16 years old – Buchan has used his natural talent to climb the ladder of success against all odds.

He won his first major event within his first year of competition and qualified on pole position in three NSW State Titles despite driving a second-hand go-kart that was significantly less advanced than newer models raced by his competitors.

In 2017, Buchan stepped-up to car racing as the test driver for Listec Race Cars in the Formula Ford Championship, making his first race appearance at the prominent Phillip Island Magic event.

The following year, he annihilated the competition in the NSW Formula Ford Series by winning 17 out of 19 races to claim the title, and then dominated the Phillip Island Magic event with pole position and three-from-three race victories.

In 2019, Buchan cemented his status as a rising star when he blitzed an all-star field at the Formula Ford 50th Anniversary race at Mount Panorama, Bathurst. He was fastest in every practice session, qualified on pole position and won two of the three races for a dominant round victory.

This led to a scholarship with Gilmore Racing in the 2019 Australian Formula Three series, and more promising offers to step-up into the fearsome new S5000 open wheelers and prominent international Formula Ford races in 2020.

But the COVID-19 pandemic created a roadblock to those plans. Instead, Buchan made his touring car debut in a low-key production car endurance race, the Wakefield 300, and finished on the podium.

That result led to Buchan testing for HMO Customer Racing late in 2020 and impressed the team to score a race seat for the following season. He immediately stamped his potential when he racked-up a podium finish in the opening round, and then went on to score two more podiums and a pair of dominant race victories in his standout rookie season.

In 2022, Buchan continued his progression with his maiden Pole Position, another race victory and four podium finishes. Through consistent front-running results, he remained in contention for the overall title into the final race, and finished third on the championship standings.

Having debuted the Hyundai i30 Sedan N TCR at Mount Panorama for the Bathurst International, Buchan will race the latest-generation machine from Hyundai Motorsport’s Customer Racing division in the 2023 TCR Australia Championship.

Buchan finished the 2023 season with 807 points with HMO Customer Racing clinching the 2023 TCR Australia Championship in a dramatic final round at Mount Panorama.

In between his racing commitments, Buchan is a professional driving instructor.
