HMO Customer Racing secures Josh Buchan for 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR

TCR Australia Series champions secure second driver for 2021

Young gun Josh Buchan has secured the plum seat at HMO Customer Racing for the 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series this year.

Buchan replaces inaugural series champion Will Brown in the #30 i30 N, with Brown taking on a full-time drive for Erebus Motorsport in the Supercars Championship.

Buchan, 24, is a former New South Wales Formula Ford state champion, and won the 2019 Bathurst 12 Hour Formula Ford Festival and finished runner-up in the 2019 Australian Formula 3 Championship.

Prior to his signing late last year, the young New South Welshman sampled the i30 N at Wakefield Park, and according to the team, showed strong pace in his maiden drive.

Buchan will join team regular Nathan Morcom, who will drive the #11 Hyundai i30 N and will look to improve on his fifth place finish in 2019. Morcom won the final race win for the year at The Bend.

The #30 Buchan entry will feature different backing to Morcom’s car, with Powercrank Batteries adorning the side of the car.

The 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series kicks off at Symmons Plains this Sunday, January 24, with two practice sessions followed by qualifying and Race 1 on Monday and Races 2 and 3 on Tuesday (Australia Day).

“I still can’t believe it. I found out not too long ago and it still doesn’t feel real,” said Buchan.

“This morning, once it was Facebook official, I was getting a lot of messages and calls, so I’m really excited.

“The Hyundai TCR car is totally its own beast. I was fortunate that I have been able to secure a drive in the Hyundai because out of all of the brands in TCR, it’s one of the strongest. The test at Wakefield Park was great – totally different to anything I’ve driven previously, but I felt that I adapted to it quickly.

“I haven’t raced at Symmons Plains before. I’ve driven past it, so that’s as close as I’ve been. I’m pretty confident that within the first session, I should be able to get my head around things and have a good weekend.

“It’s not daunting replacing Will (Brown). The car and the team have proven themselves. HMO is the outfit that everyone wants to be with so I consider myself fortunate that they’ve signed me up. I’m not taking too much pressure into it, and I feel that if we all do our job, then we’ll be competitive.

“Barry Morcom is a champion of motor racing. He is the guy you want to drive for, so I can’t thank him enough for the chance. And to have a guy like Rob Benson in the squad, he has been pivotal getting me into the car. I can’t wait for the season to start.”
